Decentralized Intelligence Agency Announces Expansion

The Decentralized Intelligence Agency, northern Michigan’s fastest growing public relations agency, announced it has added two new clients, hired a new account assistant, launched a new web site, and moved into larger offices. The announcement was made by principals Luke Haase and Gregg Smith.

Charter Communications, the nation’s fourth largest cable television company, has engaged The Decentralized Intelligence Agency for public relations and community relations for the company’s systems in Michigan’s northwest Lower Peninsula. Owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Charter Communications is widely credited as being on the cutting edge of technology such as digital cable, Internet connectivity, and other next generation products and services. Charter serves more than 600,000 customers throughout Michigan.

The agency was hired by the American Society for Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET), based in Frederick, Md. Founded in 1987, ASLET is the largest law enforcement training association of its kind in the world. It has nearly 7,000 active members from Canada, Australia, England, Israel, Portugal, Germany, Haiti, France, Venezuela, Norway, Bangladesh, Guam, New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, and Africa.

Kelhart Marine Technologies engaged The Decentralized Intelligence Agency to handle public relations efforts for its statewide launch. Kelhart is the first Michigan-based company to be granted permits by the State to harvest bottom logs from the Great Lakes.

Agency principals also announced the hiring of Tania Egger Harris as account assistant. Ms. Egger Harris has more than six years experience in marketing and public relations, including work at Publicom in Lansing, Trio Communications in Clarkston, and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Egger Harris is a native of Charlevoix.

Decentralized Intelligence Agency recently moved to a larger suite of offices within the same building. The office remains in Traverse City at 109 S. Union Street. The new suite number is 303.

And, The Decentralized Intelligence Agency launched its web site after several months of development. The site address is http://www.intelligenceagency.com. Visitors can review client case studies, meet the principals, and view a sampling of recent media “hits” from media outlets worldwide.

Mr. Haase and Mr. Smith commented, “These are important milestones in our aggressive growth plan. Most importantly, we are delighted to have attracted Tania, someone with an esteemed reputation and experience base and who knows northern Michigan.”

Meaningless prose? You bet. Yet this type of buzzword laden jargon is all too frequent in press releases that dot the business wires or are spammed to working journalists around the country.

We’ve noticed more of it: technical jargon to make companies sound savvy without providing any clarity. Good PR counsel will advise that if it takes an engineering degree to understand your press release, then you’re not doing your job.

Some solutions to ending the buzz deluge:

• Write copy in AP (Associated Press) style and avoid hyperbole.

• Create a good headline that’s clear and easily understood.

• Use humor and creativity. They can make an editor’s or reporter’s day.

• Justify claims with facts.

• Find someone who doesn’t know the business to proof releases. If they can understand it, others will.

• Avoid “LAQ’s” –Lame A– Quotes. Those management quotes that find their way into releases often say nothing. Either say something new, or delete them.

• Think visually, using charts, graphs and diagrams to explain complicated subjects.
